At Main Line Fence, our rich history in the industry and in the community sets us apart. Since 1948, we have been installing high-quality fences for industrial, commercial and residential projects across the state of Maine. Our work can be seen at neighborhood homes and in some of the most prominent locations in the state. For decades, Mainers have known they can trust us with their fencing needs and our work to this day shows why.
Our History
Main Line Fence Co. was incorporated by Robbins & White on March 31, 1948, as a separate division of the steel company. After two decades in operation as a division of Robbins & White, Main Line Fence was sold to the company’s Office Manager, Ruth Mcready. After just a year, Ruth’s health required her to sell the company and she found an energetic businessman to take the helm – Norris Cianchette. Norris’ son Rocky soon joined the company, and Main Line Fence began a strong trajectory of growth in the 1970s.
A highlight of the company’s growth in the 1970s was the opportunity to work on highway guardrail projects. Since then, highway guardrails have become a signature line for Main Line Fence.
In 1986, Norris retired and Rocky took over the company. Under his leadership, the company grew in both the commercial and residential sectors.
The family ownership of Main Line Fence continues to this day. Rocky’s son, Ryan Cianchette, joined the company in 2003 and leads the company now. As Main Line Fence entered the new century, his efforts have included updating our equipment and introducing newer technologies, including digital estimates, that improve our efficiency while allowing our experienced team to make the most of their traditional skills.
Key Projects in Our History
Over the years, as Main Line Fence expanded, our team earned an excellent reputation throughout the state. As a result, our company has had the opportunity to work on many major projects, including:
- The design and installation of all the fencing for the new Casco Bay Bridge in 1997.
- The 2009-10 replacement of all of the guardrails on I-295 between Brunswick and Augusta – guardrails which we had installed in 1977. One of our employees on the replacement project had worked on the initial project as well!
- Developing a method for pre-fabricating snow panels for the Maine Turnpike’s bridges; we have since installed hundreds of the panels.
- Installing security fencing at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Brunswick Naval Air Station and Loring Air Force Base.
- Installing fencing for the Supermax prison built in Warren, Maine, in the early 1990s with a challenging material – razor ribbon.
- Installing fencing at paper mills, including the complete enclosures of the S.D. Warren Paper Mill in Westbrook and International Paper in Jay.
A Continued Focus on Bringing Mainers the Fencing They Want
We’re proud that our team puts the same care and attention into every job – whether a prominent public works project or a residential fence to keep your kids and pets safe. Over the years, our customers have shown us that there is a big demand for wooden residential fencing, especially cedar fencing. To keep up with this demand and make sure every one of our clients has the fencing they want, we’ve added equipment and people specifically for cedar fencing. We also now manufacture our own cedar fencing. We have a long history, but we’re not afraid to change to meet the needs of the present and future.
Being able to adapt and evolve like this is part of why Main Line Fence has been so successful throughout our history. We’re grateful to our clients who continue to put their trust in us and to our employees throughout the years who have worked hard and been willing to adapt and evolve along with the times and market demands.
Rocky and Ryan’s goal is to ensure that Main Line Fence continues to meet Maine’s increasing demand for innovative, high-quality fencing for generations to come.
